Frequently Asked Questions

  • WHAT IS THE MAKULA FUND? WHAT DOES IT DO?

The Makula Fund for Children is a non-profit charitable organization founded for the purpose of supporting children orphaned by AIDS in Uganda.

In Uganda, like most countries in Africa, there is very little public education. Most primary and secondary schools are run by parent organizations or religious orders. Our mission is to provide school fees, a nutritious morning meal, mentorship, and healthcare to Ugandan children of all ages.

  • DOES THE MAKULA FUND BUILD SCHOOLS? DOES IT OPERATE SCHOOLS?

The Makula Fund does not build or operate schools. Makula enables children to attend carefully selected schools in Kampala. We pay for school tuition, uniforms, and basic supplies.

We also support a breakfast club where the students receive a nutritious meal before each school day. These expenses are funded primarily through sponsorships of individual children.

  • WHO RUNS THE MAKULA FUND?

The Makula Fund is run by a volunteer board of directors in the United States. We have a small staff in Kampala, Uganda that actively looks after the children, monitoring their progress as well as the quality of education they are receiving. The staff also handles the finances and the correspondence between students and sponsors, and sending report cards and photos to the sponsors.

  • ARE THE ORPHANED CHILDREN COMPLETELY WITHOUT FAMILY SUPPORT?

Most of our children do have some family support. One parent may be living but unable to make enough money to support the family and pay for school. Some children are cared for by an extended family member or an older sibling. In all cases, there is not enough money available to pay for school.

  • HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SPONSOR A CHILD?

For a child in primary school, the total yearly cost is $500, or about $42 per month. For a secondary school student, the yearly cost is $600 - about $50 per month. We have a few sponsors for university and vocational school students, and their tuition ranges from $1500 to $3000 per year. (Yes - much less than in the U.S.)

  • IF I SPONSOR A CHILD, HOW LONG IS MY COMMITMENT?

We hope that sponsors will be able to support a child until he or she finishes secondary school, which is equivalent to high school in the U.S. Some sponsorships start when the child enters primary school, while others start with an older child already in school.

  • CAN I PARTIALLY SPONSOR OR JOINTLY SPONSOR A CHILD?

Yes. We understand that committing to a full sponsorship for post-secondary education is not feasible for many, and we gladly accept partial sponsorships as an alternative. The online sponsorship link is customizable and accepts partial sponsorships of any amount. If you are interested in learning more about partial sponsorships, please feel free to contact us at info@makulafund.org.

There are some creative ways that some donors have jointly sponsored a child. These include community service projects, celebrations in lieu of gifts, corporate sponsorships, school partnerships, local events, and online fundraising.

  • HOW CAN I BE SURE THE MONEY I GIVE BENEFITS THE CHILD?

Come visit us in Uganda! Seriously this is possible. Also, we file annual reports wth the IRS and Ugandan entities that document how our monies are spent. Our annual newsletter includes a financial statement synopsis, providing contributors with a transparent overview of our organization's financial health and impact. The annual newsletter can be seen on the webpage: Our Impact.
